Summary: The Innocent – Season 1

When Mateo Vidal (Mario Casas) was in law school, he went with his brother Isma (Jordi Coll) to a club. As he’s talking to a girl named Eva (Ariadna Carbol) at the club, one of her friends, Hugo (Alejandro Albarracín), gets jealous and picks a fight with Isma, which they take outside. Mat gets sucked into the melee, and in the process accidentally kills a man named Daniel (Eudald Font) when he pushes him down on some rocks and he cracks his head open.

Mat gets four years for negligent homicide and overcomes the difficulties of prison life. He goes on leave when his parents die suddenly; he meets a woman named Olivia Costa (Aura Garrido); they hit it off but has to stand her up when he returns to prison to finish out his sentence. He rebuilds his life after his release, though; Isma gives him a job at his law firm, then makes him a partner after he passes the bar. Olivia, once a blonde but now a brunette, comes back into his life when she attends a meeting at his firm, and they get married. Isma dies suddenly, leaving Mat the firm. Right after they find out they’re going to be parents, Mat and Olivia look for a house in Mat’s old neighborhood.

Olivia gets a call that she has to go to Berlin for work; he’s distracted by the fact that Eva and Hugo live across from the house they like. The next day, he drops Olivia off, and he goes to meet someone else: Dani’s mother Sonia (Ana Wagener). They’ve been meeting like this for years, often with Mat pretending to be Dani to help Sonia feel better.

Mat gets a text from Olivia, but it’s not her, it’s a guy who has her phone. He sends Mat pics of him holding the phone, then later sends pics of a mysterious hotel room where she’s sprawled out wearing a blonde wig, heels and lingerie. Mat can’t track her down at all, and when she calls back later that night, she doesn’t acknowledge what happened that day.

He then gets followed, hit by a car, and a gun pointed in his face. He survives, but needs to know what’s going on. He hires Zoe (Anna Alarcón), a trusted private investigator, to dig and find out; he asks Sonia, who works at a bank, to track her credit card. What he finds out is alarming, but as we see from Berlin, Olivia may not be doing any of this on a voluntary basis.
