Content of Lecture # 6
Example # 1: Estimate of R.C.C Retaining Walls
Example # 2: Estimate of R.C.C Columns
R.C.C Retaining Walls
Retaining wall are generally used to retain earth or other materials to maintain unequal levels on two faces. The material on the back face is called backfill.
Retaining wall can be constructed with masonry as well as R.C.C.
In case of masonry retaining wall, the thickness of wall increases with height because masonry resists the lateral pressure by its weight. Thus, it is also called Gravity Retaining Wall.
While, the reinforced concrete retaining wall resists the lateral pressure by structural action such as bending and results in thinner section.

R.C.C Retaining Walls
Problem # 1: Estimate of R.C.C Retaining Wall
Prepare a detailed estimate of R.C.C Retaining Wall of 30 m length whose cross-section is given. Steel bars in reinforcement shall have to be taken separately.
Assume suitable rates.
Clear cover for stem at top is 5 cm and on bottom is 7 cm while clear cover for stem from two sides is 5 cm.
Problem # 2: Estimate of R.C.C Column
Prepare a detailed estimate of R.C.C Column with foundation/footing from the given drawings. Clear cover of footing from sides is 4 cm.
